Carlton will blood another Irishman while Andrew Walker will make his long-awaited return from injury in Saturday's clash with Essendon at the MCG.

Irishman Ciaran "Casey" Byrne has been named to make his debut in the No. 38 Navy Blue jumper – he was rewarded for his impressive summer last week when he was upgraded from Carlton's rookie list.

The 20-year-old from County Louth ran out 14 times for Carlton's VFL affiliate the Northern Blues last season.

Meanwhile Walker is set to play his first match for the senior side since Round 17 last year.

The Blues' defender returned through the VFL last week after overcoming several setbacks with a knee injury.

The addition of Walker and Byrne are among four changes to Carlton's line-up.

Patrick Cripps returns after being a late withdrawal against the Eagles with a back injury, while Dennis Armfield comes in for his first match of the season.

Troy Menzel and Simon White have both been ruled out injured, while newcomers Clem Smith and Jason Tutt have been omitted.

Tutt, Dylan Buckley and Mark Whiley have been named as the emergencies.
