The wait is over, it’s official.

Jacob Weitering is a Blue, with Carlton taking the key defender with its No. 1 pick in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.

Although he only celebrated his 18th birthday yesterday, the Dandenong Stingrays product has a reputation for being wise beyond his years.

Standing at 195cm tall and weighing 90kg, the local boy grew up on the Mornington Peninsula and played for the Mt Martha Redlegs, where he won five best and fairest awards.

The leadership qualities Weitering displayed throughout his junior football career have been obvious to everyone who’s seen him play.

His ability to take a strong mark, command the backline and intercept opposition passes made him a standout selection in this year’s draft.

After starring in Vic Country’s division one title win, Weitering was named in the U18 All-Australian team.

Carlton’s General Manager of List Management and Strategy Stephen Silvagni says Weitering will be an asset to the Blues.

“He’s a key position player who can play at both ends of the ground and he’s a really good decision maker,” Silvagni said.

“He’s also an elite reader of the play when it comes to intercept marks, one-on-one marks and he can control his opponent.”

“For a young man he’s got a great character – a mature head on young shoulders.”

Welcome to the Blues, Jacob!
