New Carlton recruit Lachie Plowman has had a pre-season setback.

Plowman has had minor hip surgery to relieve the discomfort he has been experiencing since resuming training in November.

He's expected to resume light training duties in a fortnight and will be ready to resume full training in 8-10 weeks.

The 21-year-old was traded to Carlton from Greater Western Sydney, where he played 20 AFL games after being recruited with the No. 3 draft pick in the 2012 National Draft.

A defender with terrific ability to win the ball, Plowman will be pressing his case to slot into the Blues' back six when he returns.
