Matthew Wright definitely made the ‘wright’ move!

The Carlton hard nut looks set to celebrate his 100th AFL game with the Blues this weekend against Essendon at the MCG.

He will become the 31st player for Carlton to play his 100th game at the Club, after starting his career at another team.

Wright, who arrived at Carlton having played 94 games with the Adelaide Crows, says he’s looking forward to “ticking off” the milestone.

“I haven’t really thought about it too much, it’s like the old saying ‘you look back on it when you retire’, but yeah, it’s a nice little milestone,” he told the media on Wednesday.

“It’s nice to tick it off, and to do it at a big club in Melbourne against traditional rivals Essendon on Sunday, it will be fantastic – I’m really looking forward to the game.”

Wright arrived at Carlton from Adelaide at the end of last year, after the Blues picked him up as a delisted free agent. Since stepping through the doors at Ikon Park, the midfielder-forward has impressed everyone at the Club with his professionalism, and taken every opportunity he’s been given.

“I suppose when you get delisted you feel like it’s (AFL career) done and dusted but I’m very fortunate to get another opportunity, and the Club has been fantastic.

“They’ve welcomed me and my wife over here, so I’m really enjoying my footy.”

Wright played a vital role in Carlton’s win over Fremantle, smothering the ball in Carlton’s forward 50 and handpassing it to his captain, which resulted in a pivotal goal in the last quarter when the game was on the line.

So far this season the 26-year-old is averaging over 20 disposals per game as well as nearly 10 contested possessions – a true credit to his work ethic and team-first approach.

“It’s (my year) been consistent, I just try to play my role week to week and try to bring other players into the game,” Wright said

“It was good to get the result on the weekend. We’ve been working pretty hard so it was good for the group to get the reward.”

Heading into this week’s game against the Bombers, Wright says the group will take some “confidence” from its performance in Perth.

“We’ll definitely take some confidence into it (this weekend’s game). Essendon gave us a bit of a touch-up out here in the NAB Challenge so it will be nice to get one back against them.

“They had a tough game on the weekend, but no doubt they’ll come out and play.”

Carlton takes on Essendon this Sunday afternoon at the MCG, with the game kicking off at 3:20pm.
