The Carlton Football Club began the first leg of its journey under senior coach Brendon Bolton in 2016.

After notching up seven wins for the season – three more than last year – the Blues ended up finishing 14^th on the ladder.

With the team now on a break, we’re taking a look back at each player’s year in statistics. Here’s the review for Carlton’s No. 14, Liam Jones:

OVERVIEW

Liam Jones played eight games and kicked nine goals for Carlton in his second season at Ikon Park.

After consistent performances in the VFL, Jones received his first senior call-up in Round 5, and the powerful forward made the most of his opportunity.

In the final quarter against Fremantle, Jones kicked two vital goals to help secure the Blues their first win of the season, and the first under Brendon Bolton.

His contested marking was a highlight this year, with Jones being awarded Carlton’s ‘Mark of the Week’ on five occasions. He also helped the small forwards when he couldn’t take the grab, constantly crashing packs and bringing the ball to ground.

Jones also proved a solid contributor for the Northern Blues in the VFL. He was instrumental in Northern’s Round 2 victory against Geelong. Jones had 14 disposals, nine marks (five contested) and kicked five goals, three of them coming in the second term – turning a 20-point quarter-time deficit into a half-time lead.

“It was a great win. The one we had earlier in the year against Geelong as well was up there because it was early, but to be beat Box Hill on their own deck was pretty special,” Jones said.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT

When the game was on the line in Round 5 against Fremantle, Jones took an intercept mark in the final quarter in the Blues’ forward 50. With only a few minutes left on the clock, Jones calmly went back and slotted the goal to help Carlton claim its first win of the season.
