Carlton and Hawthorn players will compete for the David Parkin medal when the two sides go head-to-head at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

The triple Carlton premiership coach and Hawthorn legend will award the medal named in his honour, to the Carlton or Hawthorn footballer he judges to be best afield during the clash.

The player who is selected by Parkin will be presented the medal in the team rooms post-match, after demonstrating exceptional leadership, presence and team values.

A Life Member of both the Carlton and Hawthorn Football Clubs, Parkin was inducted into the Australian Football Club Hall of Fame in 2002.

He made 211 senior appearances for Hawthorn across a 13-year playing career from 1961 to 1974, and captained the Club to its second premiership in 1971.

As coach of the Hawks from 1977 to 1980, Parkin steered Hawthorn to Grand Final victory in 1978, before pursing his coaching career at Carlton where he had two stints at the helm to coach the Blues to premierships in 1981, 1982 and 1995.
