Once dubbing himself ‘the moth’ because he was attracted to the bright lights of the MCG, Matthew Cottrell continued the Navy Blue legacy of the family which began when grandfather Len represented the Blues in the 1960s.
A much-loved figure at IKON Park, Cottrell is much of an energy giver off the field as he is on it, where he went from initially being a wingman to become an important high half-forward for the Blues.
Having a knack for stepping up in the big moments, Cottrell still finds himself in the No.46 locker, where he’s now the games record holder. When asked why he’s never ‘upgraded’ numbers, Cottrell was very clear: he hopes to one day become the first No.46 Navy Blue centurion.
