Chris Judd has likened writing a book to eating takeaway from a bain-marie at the local shopping centre: “It seems like a good idea at the time, but once you’ve finished with it you start to wonder if it was a good idea after all.”

The retired Carlton champion was speaking at the MCG today at the official launch of his book INSIDE: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY.

The book offers a behind-the-scenes look at the journey through Judd’s decorated career. The dual Brownlow medallist will spend the next few weeks touring the country to promote it.

“I’ve traditionally been a very private person, so to release a book where my most personal thoughts are documented will no doubt make me feel a little bit squeamish over the next couple of weeks,” Judd said.

“But to have the ability to document all the things I’ve learnt throughout 14 years of playing AFL football, and also to remind myself there’s so many wonderful people I’ve met over that journey, was too good an opportunity to pass up.

“I’m really glad I’ve done it.”

Judd’s friend, mentor and former coach Rob Wiley was invited to speak at the launch. Wiley said the book gives a great insight because Judd “shirks no issues”.

“Chris left no stone unturned,” Wiley said.

“He was very frank as he discussed the great characters he’s been involved with from Ben Cousins to Daniel Kerr and Brendan Fevola. It gives a great insight into what he saw, what he felt and what he believed in.

“There’s also a great humour that Chris has been able to put through the book and I think that’s the best part of the book – it’s not just about his football achievements, it’s also about who he is.”
