The consistent VFL seasons of Jason Tutt and Mark Whiley were rewarded with a second and third-placed finish at last night’s Laurie Hill Trophy.

Whiley’s 64 votes resulted in a second consecutive third-place in the Northern Blues’ best-and-fairest, while Tutt’s tally of 80 votes was surpassed only by winner Tom Wilson.

On three occasions Tutt polled the maximum 15 votes from his coaches, in both games against Williamstown as well as his 37-disposal, three-goal effort against Coburg in Round 7.

Tutt was leading the count until Round 13, before four best-on-ground performances in five games saw Wilson romp home to victory.

Despite an injury-interrupted start to the year, Whiley polled in seven of his last eight games, and played an integral role for the Blues.

Whiley featured in all six wins the Blues registered this season, with his opening four VFL games all seeing Northern triumph.

Northern Blues senior coach Josh Fraser paid credit to the Carlton pair on the night.

“Jason Tutt’s consistency in his ability to find the ball and his leadership saw him come second - he played a big role in buying in to the program and making the Carlton-Northern Blues alignment as strong as it is at the moment,” Fraser said.

“Mark Whiley set the tone for us in a lot of games through his leadership and willingness to compete with his attack on the ball.”

However, the night belonged to the VFL captain, who capped off an outstanding 12 months with his second Laurie Hill Trophy in the space of three years.

Wilson became the first dual-Laurie Hill Trophy winner since the early 2000s, going with his VFL Team of the Year spot and the 2016 Bullant Players’ Player of the Year Award won earlier in the night.
