A COMPLETE performance.
Carlton has produced its best performance of the season - and maybe the best in its AFLW history - in the semi final against Hawthorn, producing a 46-point victory at IKON Park.
On the back of a blistering first quarter, the Blues led from start to finish against the Hawks, prevailing 11.13 (79) to 4.9 (33).
It was a perfect night for the Blues on Abbie McKay’s 25th birthday, sister Sophie McKay kicked three outstanding goals while the Blues’ midfield fired on all cylinders in the comprehensive win.
Mimi Hill set the scene in the first quarter, producing 11 first-quarter disposals as the Blues rode an incredible wave of momentum for the entirety of the opening term.
Mia Austin kicked things off with a goal from the pocket before Hill herself rounded things out with a right-footed snap on the quarter-time siren, with Carlton defensive unit restricting Hawthorn from registering a score.
If not for inaccuracy, the Blues’ Club record quarter-time score of 4.7 (31) would’ve been even higher.
It was a much more even second term as the Hawks started to get their offensive game going, but the Blues were able to hold up well in a term where the Hawks missed opportunities of their own.
The game was played much more in Carlton’s defensive half, with Harriet Cordner typically holding up brilliantly while Maddy Hendrie fought her battles.
Scoreboard relief came off the boot of Austin and McKay, ensuring the Blues still held a commanding 27-point lead at the main break.
The contest could’ve gone one of two ways at the commencement of the second half - and fortunately for the Blues, it was emphatically in their favour.
Leaders stood up everywhere you looked, with Abbie McKay kicking a captain’s goal to start the term while Hill produced another 11 disposals in the third term.
They weren’t alone, with All-Australian nominee Dayna Finn kicking back-to-back goals and Maddy Guerin surging the ball out of the middle at will as Carlton kicked out to a game-high lead at the final change.
There was another goal for Sophie McKay - with another celebration to match - in the final term, and while the Hawks kicked the final two goals of the term, the damage was done from a Navy Blue perspective on a night where the Blues dominated disposals (+31), clearances (+16), contested possessions (+18) and tackles (+12).
The Blues will now head to Brisbane next Saturday night with a Grand Final spot on the line.
