FROM George Hewett’s potential availability, Sam Walsh’s continued recovery and Toby Greene’s opposition, AFL Senior Coach Michael Voss covered all bases in his weekly press conference.

This is what he had to say leading into Round 3.

On backing up after a win against the reigning premier:

“It’s confirmation that our method and our system can stand up against some really good opposition. It’s nice to be able to step into another year and whether you can transfer what you’ve trained against a quality team.

“We saw that transfer, and even saw more of that transfer from Round 1. That was pleasing to see.”

On George Hewett and Jack Martin:

“George will be assessed today, we’re hoping he’ll be available. He’s still got to go through the test . . . if he gets through today, he’ll be right to go.

“Jack will miss again. We think he’ll be a test next week.”

On continuing with the two-ruck model:

“I think so. We’re always trying to balance the profile of our team.

“We got some good ascendancy in the middle of the ground with ‘Pitto’ and Tom [De Koning]. It’s a model that we’re keen to continue to pursue: they both had an impact on the game.”

On just another weekly Sam Walsh update:

“He’s tracking well and getting back into main training. With Sam, it’s about taking it a session at a time and a week at a time.

“If he pulls up really well, then we can sit down with a bit more clarity where his return date is likely.

He’s keen as mustard. He would play this week if he could! But we’ve got to look at the total program — he’s pretty smart. We’re not going to do anything that puts him at risk . . . we want him to play 18-20 games for the rest of the year in good health.”

On mentors for Ollie Hollands and Lachie Cowan:

“They’ve had some good mentors. Blake has spent a fair bit of time with Ollie, as has Lochie O’Brien. 'Lach' has had a few guys willing to help him out — we call [Nic Newman] his dad, he lived with ‘Newy’ for a while and he was mentoring him a bit.

“He’s got another fantastic mentor in Sam Docherty, and Zac Williams has spent a bit of time with him as well. So he’s getting plenty of good guidance: we’ve been really impressed with how they’ve been able to step in and handle the pressure of the moment.”

On the Giants under a new coach:

“The language around the Giants has been about playing that exciting brand of footy. We’re conscious that they’ve got the ability to be able to do that, and they’ve certainly got some talent that can win games of footy.

“Nothing changes for us in terms of our approach. Our ability to take it on the road and consistently be able to apply ourselves the way we want to be able to, we feel that stacks up against any opposition.

“We just have to make sure we get out there and execute.”

On Toby Greene’s likely opponent:

“I think it’ll vary depending on where he is on the ground. He’s dangerous in a couple of parts of the ground and can make a difference.

“When he plays deep forward, we’ve got to have a plan for that. When he comes higher up the ground, we need a plan for that as well.

“He’s a wonderful player and held in high regard as captain of the football club, so we’re fully aware with what we’ve got in front of us.”
