FEW were happier for George Hewett celebrating game No.150 with a win than Nic Newman.

It was nine years ago when Newman was drafted to Sydney, 12 months after Hewett was. Upon arriving in the Harbour City, Newman moved in with Hewett as his first housemate in AFL football.

Fast forward to Friday 28 July, where both find themselves in the Navy Blue and Newman was one of the best players on the ground as Hewett saluted in his milestone game.

The standing Hewett is held in and the respect he has amongst the football club was there for all to see in the post-match presentation chaired by Carlton President Luke Sayers.

Hewett’s long-time teammate couldn’t hide his delight and pride for the milestone man.

“I love George,” Newman told ABC post-match.

“We’ve had a bit of a journey together, where we were both young, immature kids at Sydney and now to be on the opposite end as older players of this group.

“I love him, I love playing with him. He’s a no-fuss character, what you see is what you get.”

Sayers’ "how bloody luck are we" when talking about Hewett’s move from the Swans to the Blues was indicative of Hewett's impact in the four walls of IKON Park since his arrival, having become an integral part of Carlton's midfield unit.

It was in Round 1 of 2016 when Hewett debuted against Collingwood and marked it with a win, and it was a mirror result seven years later.

As he sheepishly led the team off post-match at the incessant requests of captain Patrick Cripps, Hewett’s brief time in the spotlight was much-deserved.

“Everybody just loves him: he works so hard and he’s such an honest person and player,” Newman said.

“He fronts up every week for us: I’m pumped we could get a win for him and make his 150th memorable.”
