NOT GOOD enough.
After holding ascendancy for the majority of their Round 10 clash, Carlton let a win slip through their fingers as Sydney took a strong finish into the final term.
Senior Coach Michael Voss was disappointed with the way his side ran out the game, noting that the roles and plans they had in place were not executed for the full 120 minutes of play.
Here's what he had to say.
On Sydney's strong final term:
"Stating the obvious, they finished off the game better than us, I think that’s what makes you pretty pissed off to be honest.
We had the game where we wanted it and we couldn’t finish off the game. The clearance game was pretty tough for us for most of the night - it didn’t feel like we were losing too many metres on that - but that can bank up over time.
"Then roles that we had, we strayed from: Heeney and Warner we put a heap of effort into in our planning and we couldn’t get it done in the second half and they got off the chain – the stats are there to tell the impact that they had.
"We were pretty determined to come here and do well at this venue, so to have the game largely going in our favour, there was some really good method in the way we played the early parts of the game, felt like we took it out of the contest when we needed to and got some good ball control and field position, but you have to close the deal, and we weren’t good enough to close it."
On a string of second-half fadeouts:
"The results say [other teams are] coming home stronger. There are a set of behaviours that we are not executing for long enough.
"Some of it is a bit different, so it’s not necessarily the same thing but at the end of the day, the outcome is the same, and that’s something we have to change.
"We’ll dig into that but the reality is that we’ve got a good enough method and a good enough system and roles that should be able to be done for four quarters and we just didn’t finish off the game.
"We certainly didn’t reward ourselves for the heavy effort we put in to put ourselves in a good position. If you asked us with the margin of six points at three-quarter time before the game, we’d say ‘we’ll take that and let’s go for it’.
"That was certainly the energy at the three-quarter time huddle but when we came out, there was one team that was able to finish off the work and they stayed close enough on the scoreboard and got the job done."
On not taking early opportunities:
"The first term is a little bit different to the others, we lost some genuine opportunities in the second and third quarter.
"When a team decides to sit back and you keep re-entering, sometimes it’s just about patience and it felt like we still got four or five shots on goal from those plays, so it wasn’t like we weren’t getting the shots on goal from it, but the key is how do you finish?
"The game was set up like we wanted to. It wasn’t just that, I felt like from the back half, we were moving the ball well, we took our moments when we needed to but when the game went up a little bit, we weren’t able to go up with it and we lost a lot of our method around the ball and we certainly weren’t composed enough in our front half to finish the play."
On the conditions of the game:
"It was very much a rolling ball there at times, certainly at times, Sydney took the approach to get the ball out of the area pretty quickly, they valued the territory game quite a bit, so that moved the spotlight around a little bit.
"In those clinches, we were doing very well for a large part of it, but they ended up overwhelming us and those little fumbles inside, not being able to secure the ball, couldn’t get the ball to the outside, they started to take a bit of ascendecy in those plays and that’s probably what they generated their energy off."
On Jack Silvagni and Jordan Boyd:
"We lost 'SOS' [Silvagni] there, who is obviously an important player to us, so his groin will be assessed during the week, and 'Boydy' is in concussion protocols now from that hit; he’s not doing so well. I’m sure they’ll get looked at very closely and should be treated accordingly."
On Isaac Heeney:
"His damage is done in the midfield but he also pushes forward, he had seven shots on goal, I’m probably lucky that he was inaccurate.
"He got lots of looks, we had a few little mechanics without disclosing too much to make sure we managed that but we didn’t manage it well enough between the two areas.
"They’re the little things in our game that we have to make sure we tidy up. You can make it all about one thing but obviously it’s about the execution of how we do thing, the roles you get assigned, the jobs you get done and we have to see them through.
"[Heeney and Warner are] good players, they’re very good players and that’s there for all to see and stating the obvious.
"Whatever we did, we certainly couldn’t stop them. You tip your hat to them, but I would’ve liked for us to be able to execute a bit better than what we did."
