CARLTON defender Matt Carroll has received the Round 24 Telstra AFL Rising Star nomination.
The 19-year-old earned the nomination after an impressive showing against arch-rival Essendon last Thursday, accumulating 15 disposals, seven marks and five score involvements.
Today’s nomination comes off the back of a fantastic season for the emerging defender, who played 17 games in the Navy Blue, making his debut in the Round 5 win against the West Coast.
It is a significant chapter in what has been a terrific story of resilience and perseverance over the last 18 months for the teenager.
Initially arriving at IKON Park with pick No.15 in the 2023 AFL Rookie Draft, Carroll was re-listed by the Blues at the start of this year as part of the pre-season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) following an injury-interrupted first season.
A childhood Carlton supporter, he is highly regarded for his intercept marking ability, football intelligence and outstanding kicking, recently extending his contract with the Club until at least 2027.
Carroll is the Club's third Telstra AFL Rising Star nominee for 2025, joining Cooper Lord (Round 10) and Ashton Moir (Round 19).
AFL Senior Coach Michael Voss said today’s announcement is the perfect way to recognise all of Carroll’s hard work this season.
“Matt has worked incredibly hard not only to get his body right, but also on developing his football fundamentals: this nomination is a testament to not only his resilience but his character as a Carlton person,” Voss said.
“Fantastic in the air and on the ground, Matt has really grown as an emerging defender this season, showing us the huge potential he has to be a consistent AFL footballer.
“We are so excited for Matt and look forward to seeing what next year and beyond holds for him in the Navy Blue.”
