THE AFL has confirmed two major rule changes for next season, with the centre bounce to be scrapped and the substitute player rule removed.
The traditional centre bounce will be replaced by a ball-up at all restarts, a move the League says will improve umpire safety, reduce match length, and open up umpiring pathways.

The skill-intensive bounce is said to be a barrier for prospective umpires, according to AFL footy boss Greg Swann.
"The bounce is difficult to execute and has limited the progression of talented umpires," Swann said.
"Removing it will allow umpires to focus on decision-making and reduce the risk of contact during restarts."
The substitute player rule will be abolished from the start of next season, with teams to name five interchange players from 2026 - up from four - while total rotation limits will remain unchanged.
The changes follow extensive consultation with clubs, players, umpires, and the AFLPA.
More to come.
