Carlton has boosted the future of its back six, with Maddy Hendrie and Ciara Fitzgerald both committing to remain in the Navy Blue until at least the end of 2027, after signing two and one-year extensions respectively.

Hendrie signed with Carlton during the 2023 AFLW Supplementary Draft and has featured predominately down back as a key position tall.

An integral part of the Blue’s side, standing at 180-cm tall, Hendrie utilises her sharp aerial ability to intercept, rebound and mark overhead, offering Carlton a consistent key post down back.

Training alongside experienced defender Harriet Cordner, and previously former captain and All-Australian Kerryn Peterson, Hendrie has excelled in her growth.

Already signed for 2026, Fitzgerald has solidified her commitment to the Blues, signing on for an additional year.

Arriving from Richmond in 2023, Fitzgerald was offered a senior contract as an injury-replacement player, before signing on at the end of the season.

A quiet and humble achiever, Fitzgerald is a mainstay in the Blues’ defensive line, featuring in every match since Round 3, 2024.

The 24-year-old has a natural ability to read the play and positively impacts through her athleticism and intercept-marking ability.

Head of AFLW Ash Naulty said Hendrie and Fitzgerald are the kind of players you can trust week-in and week out.

“Maddy and Ciara are reliable and consistent players, who you know will always put in the work to be the best player they can be,” Naulty said.

“Both are extremely down to earth and put their best foot forward every training session, often without external recognition.

“Maddy is a natural athlete and fierce competitor, who from the beginning has understood the work needed to excel at the highest level and has never been afraid to ask questions to help develop and grow her skills.

“Ciara has been a great addition to our side, particularly over the last 12 months, with her versatility both at ground level and in the air, which can prove dangerous when combined with her sharp football IQ.
