It seemed like the whole world was drawn to the moment Blues’ Senior Coach Michael Voss performed that citizens arrest in August, 2024.

When the coach paused his morning coffee one day to dramatically chase down a teenager in broad daylight until the authorities arrived, the entire country was drawn to the remarkable story.

That story though was only the start of what has been a newfound connection between Voss and the 16-year-old he ‘met’ that day.

“What (that situation) it did actually do was hook up an unexpected connection,” Voss told the Dyl and Friends podcast this week.

“They reached out through a mentor of his that was assigned, he sent the email, requesting that to me and I thought ‘yeh, why not?’.

“A 16-year-old young man that is trying to find his way and did the wrong thing, and I’d really love to hear his version of events. So I just enjoyed sharing about his story, about his background and where he is from.

“What we do really, at the end of the day, we mentor young men, we mentor young people.

“What I love the most out of coaching is seeing people get what they want and that sort of magic moment when you have that realisation that someone finally gets it… they get that moment where it happens and you’re like “how good is that!?” - that lights me up.

“I look for those little wins in people that just makes you feel a little bit special.”
