VFL Senior Coach Damian Truslove analyses the performances of the 16 AFL-listed Blues who featured for the Carlton Reserves in Round 3 VFL action.
8. Lachie Fogarty
15 disposals, four tackles, one goal
‘Fog’ played in two roles, in his normal forward role - which we know he does really well - as well as in the midfield. He was excellent in the last quarter, he helped us nearly get over the line.
13. Blake Acres
12 disposals, six intercepts
Blake played the first three quarters, as he was the carryover emergency for our AFL side. He ran really hard and ran really good patterns, he’s in consistent form now and will be knocking on the door for an AFL opportunity.
15. Billy Wilson
22 disposals, 10 contested possessions, one goal
It was good to see Billy showing some of his strengths, which is his power and speed coming off half-back. He created a number of opportunities for us in the front half - if he continues in this way, we think he won’t be far away from potentially getting an AFL opportunity.
16. Ben Camporeale
21 disposals, five clearances
Benny played the majority of the game in the midfield, but late in the game went forward as another aerial option for us. He did some really good work around stoppages and continues to develop his transition game.
21. Lucas Camporeale
22 disposals, five tackles
Lucas once again played a few roles, a combination of inside mid, half-forward and wing. We loved his run between contests, he worked extremely hard up and down the ground. He continues to develop: we’ll keep having a look with Lucas and a few other boys in multiple roles, it’s really good for them to have a secondary position to give them more opportunity.
25. Liam Reidy
20 disposals, 14 clearances, 30 hitouts
Liam was outstanding, for the second game in a row he was quite dominant around stoppages. His follow-up work, aggression and ability to take the ball forward was excellent, as was his competitive attitude.
26. Nick Haynes
Nine disposals
Nick Haynes played a key back role for us. His positioning to defend our forward 50 was strong, he’s trying to put together some consistent performances to get himself back in the AFL team.
28. Harry Charleson
19 disposals
Harry Charleson has had two solid games in a row now, in a lockdown defender role. He did a really good job in that role while also giving us a little bit of bounce with his offence coming off half-back.
30. Jack Ison
Eight disposals, six tackles, three goals
It was one of Jack’s better games so far this year. His defensive pressure was good, his aerial contest work continues to improve and he’s very dangerous inside the forward 50.
31. Campbell Chesser
13 disposals
Campbell Chesser played on the wing and was a good leader on the day. It wasn’t a great day for our wingers in terms of the way the game was played, but he worked extremely hard up and down to support our defence while holding good balance and shape for us.
34. Rob Monahan
Eight disposals
Rob Monahan played across half-back and gave us some drive at times. He keeps working on his defensive craft and his tackling craft.
40. Hudson O’Keeffe
Eight disposals, one goal
‘Huddo’ played about 50/50 between ruck and forward. His ruck stuff in terms of his competitiveness around stoppages was good, and he positioned himself well long down the line as a key forward. He continues to work on his leading craft as a forward.
42. Adam Saad
23 disposals, five tackles, eight intercepts
We saw some exciting things from ’Saady’, some of the strengths that he offers. We saw some bounce off half-back, some handball receives that he got through the middle of the ground and his kicking execution was very good.
43. Ashton Moir
Nine disposals, one goal
Ashton again played a combination of inside mid and forward. We love his dynamic footwork and speed. He competed pretty well for the entire game, we’re getting him to work on some areas of his game to try and get back into the AFL side.
45. Flynn Young
21 disposals, seven inside 50s, three goals
Flynn has been a really consistent performer, right through our practice matches and the first two VFL games. He kicked another three goals and had 11 score involvements, on the back of excellent leading patterns and work rate. He’s getting really close to an AFL game.
46. Matthew Cottrell
13 disposals, three inside 50s
Again, it was great to see him out there and get a little bit more game time - we’re trying to increase his game time every week coming back from injury. We love his run and his speed, he’ll keep getting better with more time out there. He played wing and half-forward.
