Stocker to debut

Bolton: Stocker to debut Brendon Bolton spoke to the media this morning announcing Liam Stocker will debut against the Kangaroos.

LIAM Stocker will make his debut in the Old Dark Navy Blue on Sunday.

Announced to the playing group this morning, Stocker will become Carlton player No.1206 when he runs out against North Melbourne on Sunday.

Selected with pick No.19 in the 2018 NAB AFL Draft, Stocker’s key asset is his disposal by foot.

The dual-sided youngster has put together an impressive run of form for the Northern Blues, playing across half-back.

Averaging 18 disposals and seven rebound 50s across his first three VFL games, Stocker - who spent a lot of his junior career as a midfielder - is likely to step in for one of the roles vacated by Nic Newman and Kade Simpson.

Speaking to media at Ikon Park this morning, senior coach Brendon Bolton said Stocker’s opportunity had come on the back of the form he’s shown to date.

“Liam Stocker will play. He’s had a few really solid games in the VFL,” Bolton said.

“Being in your first year, when you come from the NAB League to a real systematic game, he’s been learning that under Dale Amos and Shane Watson.

“It’s a great opportunity for him and a great chance for our defenders who have been working really well together to give ’Stock’ a go at half-back.”

Stocker will become the 40th player to earn his senior Carlton debut since Bolton entered Ikon Park for the start of the 2016 season.

Bolton said the newest debutant’s main assets were his class and flexibility: something which he believes which translate to AFL level.

“He’ll possibly play through the midfield as well but predominantly down back: he’s a flexible player, so we think we can play him in multiple positions,” he said.

“He’s got good power, good ball-use and he’s hard at the contest. It’s his first opportunity so he’s got to go out and enjoy it.”
