SATURDAY’S win at the MCG left Sam Walsh wanting more.

It’s been a first season like no other for the No.1 draft pick, who has slotted in seamlessly in Navy Blue.

Having played every game in his debut campaign, Walsh has relished in the AFL environment — particularly in the second half of the season, with the Blues finding winning form.

Speaking on The Two Tones podcast, Walsh said the weekend’s victory in perfect conditions at the home of footy had him ready for what was to come.

“I finished the game and I was reflecting on it a bit,” Walsh said.

“I thought to myself, ‘I would have loved to be playing finals this year.

“On days like that, it feels like finals footy: a big crowd, sun’s out. As a team, we feel like we’re going places but we know that means we can’t get complacent.

“That’s why this pre-season is crucial for us.”

From the outset, Walsh has made an impact at Ikon Park, averaging over 25 disposals a game.

Walsh has quickly endeared himself to the football world in 2019: namely, the Carlton faithful. That appreciation would have only grown after he answered what he enjoyed most about the season so far.

“Coming into Carlton, to play for the jumper,” he said.

“It sounds pretty cliche, but the history of this club has been pretty incredible and you can’t take that for granted.

“Since coming in, all of these boys have been amazing and to play with them and to create friendships for life — you do that through winning more and more.”

Walsh will return to familiar surroundings this weekend, with the former Geelong Falcon to run out on GMHBA Stadium to take on Geelong for the first time.

However, well and truly immersed in his new home, he was quick to heap praise on the supporters who were in full voice at last week’s final home game of 2019.

“The supporters all year have been quite amazing, really,” he said.

“They keep turning out and you can feel that energy when we get up and about. The [Saints] game was one of the loudest I’ve played at, probably apart from Round 1.

“To see the Carlton supporters get up and about and to get the win for them was unreal.”
