The Carlton Football Club is pleased to welcome Jack Newnes to Ikon Park as a delisted free agent.

Newnes, who played 155 games and kicked 55 goals across eight seasons with the Saints, will join Carlton for the 2020 season.

He also brings leadership qualities having spent four years as part of the St Kilda leadership group.

Renowned for his elite endurance, the wingman started the 2019 season in fine form, collecting 20 or more disposals in each of the first five rounds.

The 26-year-old was prominent through the midfield, managing to record over 400 metres gained in six of his 20 appearances this year.

Newnes was at his best against Hawthorn in Round 4 at Marvel Stadium, collecting 26 disposals, six rebound 50s and a goal to lead St Kilda to a five-point win.

He has also shown remarkable durability, playing 123 consecutive games across eight seasons at St Kilda to tie the club record for the most consecutive games played.

The new Blue was drafted from the Northern Knights with pick No.37 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft.

Newnes said he could not wait for pre-season to begin in the Navy Blue.

“I am really excited, it has been a bit of a whirlwind the last couple of months but I’m glad the decision has been made. I am rapt to start and get to know everyone,” Newnes said.

“I think there are a lot of young players here and I’ve got a lot of experience so hopefully I’ll be sharing a bit of knowledge about what it takes.

“I’ve got a lot of improvement in my game personally: I haven’t yet reached the highest level I can, so I am really excited to push myself and push the group as well.”

Carlton GM of List Management and Strategy Stephen Silvagni said the Blues were looking forward to adding Newnes to an exciting midfield group.

“Jack has been in the system for eight years, he is a mature body who has played over 150 games and we think he can strengthen our playing list,” Silvagni said.

“He is an elite runner who will add another dynamic for us through the middle of the ground.

“We are looking forward to seeing Jack hitting the ground running once he commences pre-season in November.”

The final delisted free agency period closes on November 22.

Carlton heads into the 2019 NAB AFL Draft on November 27-28 at Marvel Stadium holding picks Nos.9, 43, 57, 70 and 85.
