Carlton VFLW recorded its third win of the season at IKON Park on Saturday with an 83-point victory over Casey, 14.12 (96) to 2.1 (13).
The Blues came out firing, dominating the first term as they quickly piled on three goals within the first five minutes. The intensity on the ball was relentless as the hosts controlled both possession and territory right from the start.
Carlton continued to create scoring opportunities inside 50 and ended the first term with six goals.
The second quarter saw Carlton’s defence in action as they held firm. The Blues' backline played their role perfectly, maintaining their structure and applying constant pressure, forcing turnovers before clearing the ball into their attacking half.
The hard work paid off when the ball found Hannah Bowey for another Blues goal, giving Carlton a comfortable lead.
While the second quarter was less explosive, the Blues were quick and skilful as they maintained their lead and kept Casey goalless.
Carlton continued its strong form into the third quarter, applying pressure across the entire ground as they ensured the ball stayed in their attacking half and denied the Demons any chance of sustained possession. Nell Morris-Dalton added to the scoreboard with a calm finish, rewarding repeated forward entries and further extending the lead.
With Casey still searching for their first major, there was a noticeable lift in their intensity. However, Carlton’s defence held firm, winning the ball back quickly even after opposition clearances. Although the midfield battle persisted, Carlton continued to create scoring chances.
The steady flow and teamwork paid off again when Turner Funk broke through to kick her first goal of the season, strengthening Carlton’s lead. Funk played an impressive game, leading Carlton’s for disposals with 24. Shortly after, the Blues saw McCarthy complete a hat-trick with her third goal for the game.
Heading into the fourth quarter, Carlton showed no signs of easing up as they held a 62-point lead. McCarthy continued her excellent form, adding another goal to bring her tally to four majors and nine marks, proving to be a threat inside 50 with her ability to find space and convert under pressure.
While the Demons showed fighting spirit in the final quarter, Carlton’s defence stood tall.
In the end, it was the Blues’ consistency, defensive pressure, and ability to capitalise on opportunities that allowed them to control the game throughout.
