CARLTON AFL Interim Coach Josh Fraser spoke to media on Thursday morning for a noteworthy press conference at IKON Park.
After GM of Football Chris Davies confirmed the invitation was extended to Fraser about the Club's Senior Coach role, here's what Fraser had to say.
On being invited to enter the coaching process:
"There’s been a conversation and an opportunity to go through the process, which I’m grateful for. I’ll take some time now to consider whether I’m part of it or not.
"It’s considering everything that comes with a Senior Coach and being prepared to go through that process. I’ve got a high awareness of it, and this opportunity has given me the chance to live it to a degree. But I want to make sure that when I go through the process, if I was to be successful, that I hit the ground running.
"That’s the way I approach most things in life: really considered and making sure I’m as best placed, not only for myself but the people around me.
"Sitting in the chair, you’re exposed to a large number of things - but you’re not exposed to everything. I’m aware of that. But I also feel like over the course of my coaching journey, I’ve had some great opportunities and experiences that are a bit unique as well.
"I’m also aware that you can go through a process and be unsuccessful, but come out of the other side better for it. Those are the things I’m considering now, while balancing it out with a game in a couple of days against Brisbane."
On if he entered the process and proved to be unsuccessful, would it be difficult to remain at Carlton:
"I’ve heard that a little bit. Does it make it difficult? Not from my perspective. I’m a Club-first person: that’s been my approach when I took on the interim role, making sure the Club was better placed come the end of the season.
"Ultimately, I’ll do what is best for the Club.
"This football club is quite unique. It’s a big football club, it’s got great passion and supporter base. I think whoever the successful candidate is to coach this football club is going to enjoy doing that."
On chatting to players about his future:
"I don’t put the players in that position, I don’t think it’s fair to talk about that with the players. The thing I’ve loved about our playing group is the space they’re in, they’re very process-orientated right now. We understand there’s a really big challenge in front of us this week."
On Harry McKay's potential availability:
"We expect him to train today, he had a really good session over the weekend and he’s tracking in the right direction. We want to see him get through today, and not just get through but also perform really well in training."
On lessons from the last time the Blues played the Lions:
"We’ve had a bit of a look at the last game we played against them, but also some of their form recently as well. There are some things we’ll be able to take from the last encounter, but also acknowledging the form they’re in and the quality they’ve got across the field, how deep their midfield bats and how well they’re coached.
"There’s a lot of stuff that you look at with Brisbane that you need to take away from them, but you also need to lean into what you do really well. We’re still evolving our game style which I’d say is still a bit clunky, but there’s evidence and a framework of how we want to play."
On Patrick Cripps' 250th game:
"He’s resembled so much hope for this football club for a long period of time. You guys get to see him on the field or in front of a microphone, but we get to see him day to day. He’s got a presence about him and he’s a much-loved figure.
"At times he’s had to carry a fair load, but he’s done it with such class and dignity. He’s a credit to his family - the football club is very lucky to have someone like him."
On Nic Newman's early prognosis:
"Nothing specific on Nic. We’re still working through what that looks like, but he’s going to be a loss specifically for this weekend, given the form he’s been in and his leadership. Nic will stay actively involved in helping the group get set up and perform."
On Jacob Weitering's progress:
"He’s tracking well. He’s progressing well through training. Given it was a recurrence of an injury, we’ll be really considered and planned with how we integrate him back into games."
