TWO-TIME All-Australian Lachie Whitfield has joined the Blues.
The classy playmaker lands at Carlton on day seven of the 2026 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period, making the move from GWS.
In addition to Whitfield, Carlton has also acquired picks Nos.31 and 50 in this year’s draft, in exchange for picks Nos.25 and 26 and the Blues’ 2028 third-round selection.
Taken with pick No.1 in the 2012 AFL Draft, Whitfield arrives as one of the most credentialled and accomplished ball users in the competition, with over a decade of experience and consistency at the highest level.
Whitfield's durability has been just as remarkable as his output, playing 278 games across 14 seasons.
Regarded as one of the best run-and-carry players in the game, Whitfield’s superb decision-making and elite disposal on both sides of the body will see him be a key addition to Josh Fraser’s side.
Also a two-time best and fairest winner with GWS (2018, 2020), he took his game to new heights in 2024, earning his second All-Australian blazer after finishing the season ranked No.3 for disposals across the competition.
He backed that up with another outstanding campaign in 2025, finishing inside the top 10 in the league for disposals and third for effective kicks, continuing that form into 2026 where he averaged over 28 disposals and did not drop below 20 disposals for the season.
Whitfield’s finals résumé also speaks for itself, with 18 appearances - including a Grand Final - and being named GWS’s best finals player in 2023.
He will reunite with best mate and now teammate Nick Haynes at IKON Park, with the pair having tied for the Kevin Sheedy Medal as the Giants’ best and fairest in 2020. He also arrives with familiar faces in Nic Newman and Jacob Weitering, having come through the same junior club at Mt Martha.
Carlton General Manager of Football Chris Davies said the Club was pleased to attract a player of Whitfield's calibre.
“As a club, ahead of this trade and free agency period, we identified the need for a playmaker and a key forward, and we have acquired two such players in Lachie and Joel Amartey, who will really add to our group,” Davies said.
“Lachie is one of the premier ball users in the competition, and to add such a quality player to the side is a significant boost for our football club.
“What makes him so valuable is how he performs week after week, season after season. That kind of durability and consistency doesn't happen by accident: we are welcoming a player who knows what it takes to perform consistently at AFL level, making his experience invaluable for our emerging talent.
“Beyond the individual accolades, Lachie brings genuine leadership and finals experience to our group. He complements the way we want to play our footy - fast, dynamic, and the type of player who energises a crowd. To be able to see him do that in front of a packed Carlton home crowd will be exciting.
“We know how valued he was at the Giants, and we can't wait to see the influence he'll have in the Navy Blue.”
