ON a day where one of their fellow 2015 draft class members came off through injury, two Carlton bookends shone at a dark Adelaide Oval.

At one end, Harry McKay kicked multiple goals for the ninth time in 17 AFL games.

At the other, Jacob Weitering rendered Justin Westhoff goalless as the best afield for the Blues.

It was the second straight week in which the 20-year-olds stood out for Carlton. And while it may be a 22-week season, the form of McKay and Weitering should have supporters excited by what is in store for 2019.

McKay showed he could stand up as the leading man in the forward line, working well in tandem with Mitch McGovern after the early absence of Charlie Curnow.

It was McKay’s ability to impact around the ground which was most prevalent on Saturday, after an equally-impressive performance in Round 1.

With five marks and five score involvements to go with his two first-quarter goals, he’s building and adding to his game by the week.

The role which Weitering played against Port can generally go unheralded or unnoticed - however, the quality of his showing meant it was anything but.

Tasked with locking down Westhoff after his five goals in Round 1, Weitering’s ability to shut out Port’s danger man and get the Blues going was a standout.

Eight of his 11 disposals were intercept possessions, while he led the Blues for one percenters (10) and rebound 50s (seven). After a strong showing in the opening round, this was another step up for Carlton’s No.23.

And with so much footy to come in Navy Blue, Carlton supporters can look forward to a lot more from two key pillars in phase two.
