CARLTON has suffered its first defeat of the VFLW season, going down to Hawthorn at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues struggled to maintain a rampant Hawks outfit for the majority of the day, as they eventually succumbed 9.10.64 to 2.1.13.

There were danger signs early for the Blues, with Hawthorn nailing its first three majors in the opening quarter while rendering the Blues scoreless.

With the Blues trailing by 20 points at quarter-time, Celine Moody stepped up for a memorable first goal for the club.

She was able to boot the first goal of the second term within a minute of playing time, after breaking a tackle and slotting her shot on the run from 40 metres.

However, the Hawks responded in emphatic fashion, kicking three unanswered goals to head into half-time with a commanding five-goal lead.

It was much the same in the second half for the Blues, who couldn’t halt the Hawks’ momentum in the latter's first game at home so far this season.

Hawthorn piled on the pressure and were able to extend their lead out to nearly seven goals heading into the final term.

Darcy Vescio provided a ray of light with a strong mark and straight set shot, but it was merely a consolation as the Hawks ultimately inflicted a 51-point defeat to the Blues.

Carlton's next VFLW game will be an AFL curtain raiser against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.
