THE Navy Blue works for Lucy McEvoy.

It was intense, it was crazy and in the end it was "so good" when McEvoy’s name was called out with pick No.2 in the 2019 NAB AFL Women’s Draft.

For a long time, McEvoy would’ve known that her AFLW dream was going to be realised yesterday.

As McEvoy put it herself on SEN’s Bob and Andy, it’s been something she’s been talking about for a long time.

“Since I started I’ve been dreaming about this,” McEvoy said.

“I used to say to my family that I’ll be the first girl to play in the men’s league. Obviously, that was a bit ambitious.

“Since the women’s league came in, I thought ‘I can have a real crack here’. I was lucky enough for my dreams to come true.”

McEvoy’s credentials speak for themselves: she was a premiership captain with the Geelong Falcons and achieved three consecutive under-18 All-Australian selections.

It’s even more impressive when you realise that those three All-Australian nominations were in three different areas of the ground (defence, forward and then midfield).

The 18-year-old produced a tongue-in-cheek answer when asked what she’d most prefer.

“At the moment, I play my best football in the midfield,” she said.

“Then again, who doesn’t like kicking goals? You get to celebrate and all the glory is on you.

“Then down back, you’re the underdog when you come up against forwards and I do like the feeling of ruining their day."

Described in all corners as a ‘natural footballer’, McEvoy has her eyes on a paramedicine degree away from the football field.

However, when pre-season rolls around, all eyes will be on the big impact she’s bound to make in Navy Blue… wherever that happens to be.

“I don’t really model my game on anyone,” she said.

“I look at people’s different games and take different things from everyone I come across, whether they’re on a different team or my own team.

“I try and use what their strengths are and build on my own.”

One thing that is for sure? McEvoy’s affinity for her new colours.
