OVER the last two nights, Carlton has significantly added to its young midfield depth and class.

With its three selections in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft, Brodie Kemp, Sam Philp and Sam Ramsay became Blues — and all will have eyes on majority midfield time throughout lengthy careers at Ikon Park.

Kemp and Philp have been Blues for 24 hours after Carlton ‘split’ its opening selection with a live trade on night one of the draft.

They were joined on the second night by Ramsay: a fellow Victorian midfielder who finished the season in a flurry.

Averaging 31 disposals in his last eight weeks, Ramsay can do it all: win uncontested ball, win contested ball and can get involved in a scrap.

Every bit the midfield bull, he overturned a slow start to the season to find the form which made him a Blue: it was no surprise that his outstanding run coincided with a move to an inside midfield role.

A joint-winner of the Calder Cannons best and fairest, he rounds out Carlton’s midfield qualities acquired in the national draft: that being, Kemp’s strength and Philp’s speed.

While they (Kemp in particular) can play multiple roles, it was another indication of Carlton replenishing its midfield with quality at the draft.

It comes after Carlton selected Sam Petrevski-Seton and Zac Fisher (2016), Paddy Dow and Lochie O’Brien (2017) and Sam Walsh and Liam Stocker (2018) at the draft table: all of whom will form the nucleus of Carlton’s midfield for years to come.

There’s a 24-year-old by the name of Patrick Cripps, too.

The work isn’t done yet: Carlton will look to finalise its list at the pre-season and rookie drafts tomorrow morning from 10am.
