Although the result didn’t exactly go our way, nearly 86,000 people showed up at the MCG to witness Carlton and Collingwood battle it out for the Richard Pratt Cup on Saturday.
The Richard Pratt Cup is in aid of raising awareness for prostate cancer amongst Australian men, Carlton President, Stephen Kernahan thanked supporters for their valuable contribution.
“It was fabulous to see so many football fans, in particular Carlton supporters, play an active role in assisting us to raise awareness of prostate cancer and assist the Pratt Foundation in raising valuable funds for prostate cancer research,” he said.
“It was particularity moving to see some of Carlton’s biggest supporters who have been effected by this disease, stand side by side with some of the clubs greats including Alex Marcou and David Parkin, as well as other Carlton supporters including, celebrity Dave Hughes and Melbourne Rebels Rugby star Stirling Mortlock, for the on-field guard of honour.”
Thousands also donated their loose change to tin shakers who were scouring the ground and volunteers handed out over 15,000 blue ponchos to supporters.
All money raised through the Richard Pratt Cup will go to the Richard Pratt Fellowships in Prostate Cancer, an initiative that provides fellowships to researchers aiming to identify significantly improved treatment for sufferers of prostate cancer. Each year the Fellowship will commit $100,000 to individual applicants who are conducting translational research in prostate cancer. Online donations are still available for those wishing to contribute through Carlton’s online shop at www.carltonfc.com.auRPC
