The day comprised of the students watching training in the famous stands of the Carlton Football Club, which they got much enjoyment out of. As well as getting a tour through VISY park.
The students come from many different cultural backgrounds, Afghani, Iranian, Iraqi, Colombian, Turkish, Somali, Japanese, Korean, Burmese, Indian, Maldivian, Chinese and Ethiopian - and this is just one class. For most of them this is their first year in Australian (and their first football season!). So having an experience such as this was a great buzz for all the students.
Karen Mcmillian, their class room teacher explained that “One of the important things they all say they want to achieve in Australia is a feeling that they are part of the culture and they can understand and participate in things that other Australians do. This can be quite hard to achieve so this opportunity is like gold to them”.
The students will get the opportunity to go to a live game in a fortnight when the Blues take on the Saints.
We hope the experience was something the students enjoyed and hopefully one day we can see them running around with a Sherrin in their hand.
