A SHINING light for the Northern Blues so far this season, Hugh Goddard continued his outstanding run of form on the weekend.

For the third time this season, Goddard was named among the best players by his coaches, following on from his opening game against Geelong and a best-on-ground performance against Collingwood.

The key defender was similarly impressive in yesterday’s VFL win, as he continues to put together an impressive form-line for Northern.

VFL senior coach Josh Fraser was quick to pay credit to the defender, saying his recent form was a reward for his commitment to the cause.

"Hugh’s body of work over the opening four weeks and pre-season has been really strong,” Fraser said.

“He’s become really consistent, dependable player in our back six. His aerial contests have been super, even his ability to see the easy target and take that.”

Goddard arrived at Ikon Park via the 2018 NAB AFL Rookie Draft, desperate to make the most of his second chance after injuries interrupted his career at St Kilda.

A key cog in the Northern Blues’ 3-1 start to the year, Goddard has averaged over 15 disposals and seven marks a game. Arguably his best game came on the weekend, when he picked up 18 disposals and hauled in 10 marks in a resolute defensive showing.

“He’s a good size, he’s got good presence and he can move and adapt quite well. He’s been able to do a good job on opposition key forwards for us,” Fraser said.

“The most important thing and overarching thing to his performances has been his leadership, the way he dials in players around him.

“We’ve been really pleased with his form and consistency and his buy-in.”
