Former Test star Mike Hussey took time out of his busy schedule this week to pay a visit to Visy Park.

'Mr Cricket' spoke to Carlton players about his impressive career and share his experiences in dealing with the pressure of elite sport.

Hussey made his Australian Test debut at the relatively late age of 30, making more than 15,000 first-class runs before securing the baggy green.

He told players it was tough going as he battled for an opportunity at the national level, but the hard work and effort was well worth it.

"During my first five years in Western Australia I performed pretty well,” Hussey said.

“I was scoring plenty of runs, training really hard and I was both physically and mentally fit – but I still had to wait my turn to join the Australian team."

Hussey finally got his opportunity at the Gabba on 3 November 2005, replacing batsman Justin Langer in the series against the West Indies.

When the time to step-up finally arrived, Hussey admits nerves nearly got the better of him.

"We sung the national anthem five minutes before we had to go out, and that's when I lost all feeling in my legs,” Hussey said.

"It's just amazing how the mind works. I will never forget that moment, when I faced my first ball."

Hussey only managed the one run in his first innings, but as they say: the rest is history. He went on to play in 79 Tests, making some 6,235 runs including 19 centuries.
