MARC Murphy doesn’t need to look far for a reminder of where he has come from.

Back at the end of 2005, Murphy walked into Ikon Park as a midfielder selected with a first-round draft pick. He was given the No.3 jumper: he’s now played the most games out of any Blue in the guernsey.

Flanking him in the Nos.2 and 4 are Paddy Dow and Lochie O’Brien, two midfielders whose career trajectories are beginning at a similar spot to the now-veteran.

Speaking to Carlton Media, Murphy said he was buoyed by the progress of his locker neighbours so far in pre-season.

“‘Dowy’ and ‘Obi’ [Lochie O’Brien] are really good and having those two younger guys next to me makes me feel a bit younger, which is nice,” Murphy said.

“‘Obi’ has a tremendous left leg and is an amazing runner: his attributes are really good for us. Dow is obviously an explosive inside mid… he’s really impressing everyone.

“Both are really fit and strong at the moment so I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do.”

Murphy’s sentiment was spread across the board when it came to Carlton’s emerging midfield group.

Having a first-hand look of their development in recent months, the veteran said there was a noticeable difference compared to years gone by.

“A lot of our younger guys are starting to look like men, which is really good. They’re a lot fitter, a lot stronger,” he said.

“The amount of guys who are in a much better position than this time last year is a huge improvement.

“Competition for spots is going to be red hot, which is a really good thing for us.”

So who does Murphy believe can take the next step?

“‘Walshy’ was obviously extremely good in [running and covering the ground] and he has gone to another level. He’s a star and I think he’ll be excited to back up that first year,” he said.

“Zac Fisher has been terrific… he’s flying as well. I’m really enjoying watching him.

“’Setters’ is going really well. He has really improved a year after coming off a knee injury.”
