TRUSTING the process and backing yourself in.

These were the two takeaways from new Blue Lucy McEvoy’s first hit out in Navy Blue on Saturday morning.

Despite going down to the Kangaroos by eight points in the practice match at Ikon Park, McEvoy is pleased with the fight-back shown by her new teammates.

“We mainly focused on just trusting our process and backing ourselves and trusting each other to win the ball,” McEvoy said.

“We had a bit of a breakdown in the midfield and different areas of the ground, so the main focus going into the last three quarters was to just regroup, play our game and don’t be dictated by what they do.”

With under two weeks until the AFLW Blues kick off their 2020 campaign against Richmond, McEvoy showed promise through the centre.

A highlight of the scratch match was a McEvoy goal late in the fourth quarter, showing a glimpse of what got recruiters excited about the 2019 No.2 selection.

“I just tried to do the little things and put pressure on, and it started to go my way a little bit,” she said.

“In the fourth quarter I managed to get on the end of one of Tayla Harris’ big bombs and get the big mits on it which I was pretty happy with.

“I didn’t think it was going to happen and I was just trying to focus on the little things like body work around the footy and I think that really helped me going into the last couple of quarters.”

McEvoy was quick to praise her fellow new Blues in the fight-back efforts, Grace Egan and Vaomua Laloifi the top of her list.

“I think the other new girls did really well, Grace Egan especially in the midfield,” she said.

“We spoke in the team meeting just after the game how Gracie was able to come out of her shell as well and speak up when she needed to.

“Of course Mua as well, she did really well in the backline and took some really great marks for us and held her own down there which was really impressive to see.”
