He may be officially on holidays but Michael Jamison is keeping the Carlton flag flying. On Sunday he made a surprise visit to see Charles Foote, a lifetime Carlton supporter who was celebrating his 100th birthday.

Michael had spoken with Charles’ daughter about visiting Charles who is at Mercy Place in Melbourne and he was able to visit along with family members to add to the special celebrations.

It was no short visit, Michael stayed with Charles and the family for over an hour chatting to everyone and was on hand to sing the Carlton theme song and see Charles cut his 100th birthday cake.

Charles is certainly one of Carlton’s oldest supporters and he was born in Carlton and lived in the suburb for most of his early life. He attended school in nearby East Melbourne and is his early days worked at the Victoria Market as a vegetable merchant then followed up with a market garden, fruit shops and finally at the Coburg Market.

Charles met his late wife Gladys in Carlton at the Merri Palais dance and they later married at St. Jude’s in Lygon Street. A Carlton man through and through Charles was one of the first to purchase a membership to the Carlton Social Club when it was founded.

He and Gladys were regulars at the football and he continued to see the Blues in action until recently. While he no longer attends Carlton matches he still watches the Blues on tv.

It was Charles’ day on Sunday October 25 and thanks to Michael Jamison it was that extra special. Charles’ daughter Noela was certainly impressed with Michael and in a note of thanks to Carlton said; “What a boy! Michael stayed for around 1.5 hours…..”
