“Before I start this evening I want to ensure everyone is aware of this Club’s position in relation to the season opening game against Richmond following a suggestion by the AFL CEO today the game may be played here at Etihad Stadium.
“Simply, it is not an option.
“We have worked hard with Richmond to build up the season opener and with crowds averaging more than 74,000 it must be played at the MCG.
“There is no option.”
Kernahan then spoke about Carlton’s increasing work in the community focusing on the promotion at tonight’s game in conjunction with Visy and the ‘Boots For All’ program.
“Carlton and Visy have joined forces to support Boots For All as part of the Club’s commitment to the community,” Kernahan said.
Visy set up containers outside the ground prior to the match for supporters to donate second-hand football boots and sporting equipment to ‘Boots For All’ for redistribution to disadvantaged communities across Australia.
“This is an example of our work with Visy to support the community and help make a better world and to encourage young people to lead more sustainable lives,” Kernahan said.
“The Carlton Football Club understands the important role we play in the community. Recently we commenced the Nick Duigan High Rise Footy Program in conjunction with Carlton Primary School and Victoria Police. A program for all students and local community members in the Carlton commission housing area.
“This is another great example of the work the Carlton Football Club is doing in the community and in this instance in the local area, the City of Melbourne,” added Kernahan.
Kernahan was speaking in front of over guests, including The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Robert Doyle at the official function.
The President also spoke on the good news during the week with the re-signing of Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kreuzer; “23 year-olds who are both very important players and also quality young men who are great ambassadors for the Carlton Football Club.”
Kernahan then turned his attention to the on-field performance and the importance of the game saying that talk doesn’t matter, only actions will make a difference.
