Carlton CEO Greg Swann has issued the following letter in response to the many emails and phone calls received by the Club following the AFL Exchange Period, in particular the decision by the Club to trade Brendan Fevola.

Swann said it was obviously a very emotional time for everyone involved with Carlton but he was pleased to see the passion shown by many Carlton supporters.

“It was an emotional issue and it was interesting that there were so many varied opinions expressed to the Club. Importantly it showed the real passion the Carlton supporters have for the Club, no matter if they were critical or supportive of the decision, there was real passion for the Navy Blues.”

The letter to Members and Supporters re the Trading of Brendan Fevola

The decision was made by the Board following consultation with the Football Department and Management and was based on what was considered to be in the best interests of the Carlton Football Club. There was no involvement from the playing group or individual players.

Football is a very emotional game. Not surprisingly we have been contacted by many members and supporters in relation to the decision. The reaction has been divided; some have supported the decision and indicated they would not renew as a member if Brendan stayed at Carlton, others have been critical suggesting they do not intend to renew their membership as a result of the trade.

There is no doubt, Brendan is an exceedingly popular and talented player.

However, the Club has had to deal with a number of off-field behavioral issues during Brendan’s playing career at Carlton, most recently his unacceptable behavior at the Brownlow Medal, which have reflected poorly on the Carlton Football Club and everyone involved with the Club.

The Carlton Football Club has a responsibility to provide the best environment for the development of our entire playing list and to ensure every player has the opportunity to prepare to perform to the best of their ability. This cannot be compromised as we strive to become a better team and a better club.

We also have a responsibility to each individual player to ensure they reach their potential both on and off the field. When the decision was made, Brendan agreed he needed a change of environment and his preference was to be traded to another club.

The Club wishes Brendan well for the future and sincerely hope the move to Brisbane will provide him with the opportunities he is seeking.

We trust you understand why the Club has made this tough decision and we look forward to your continued support of the Carlton Football Club.
