5. SAM PETREVSKI-SETON

THE curtain has been drawn on an unprecedented 2020 season for the Navy Blues.

Trading Ikon Park for 10 different hotel hubs across Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, it’s been a year we won’t soon forget.

With the final siren having rung on the final game, it’s time to look at those who featured in five or more games for Carlton or made their AFL debuts in 2020.

Here’s the year that was for Carlton’s No.5, Sam Petrevski-Seton.

OVERVIEW

Entering his fourth season in the Navy Blue, Sam Petrevski-Seton played all bar one game in 2020, continuing to feature across half back.

It marked Petrevski-Seton’s first full season in the role, having made the transition in the final stages of 2019 under Senior Coach David Teague.

The smooth mover proved his wares in bursts, with his speed and classy ball use creating scoring opportunities from the backline. He also grew in the defensive side of the game, locking down dangerous opposition forwards weekly.

BEST PERFORMANCE

Petrevski-Seton’s best performance clearly came in the Blues’  narrow win against the Swans in Round 16.

In a memorable comeback win that went right down to the wire, Petrevski-Seton gathered a season-high 22 disposals, nine contested possessions and proved to be the classiest player on the ground in the wet.

Proving his class across half-back, the 22 year old collected eight AFLCA votes for his efforts, with his ability to mop up and hit targets by foot standing out in tricky conditions.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT

When you think of Carlton’s Round 12 win against Fremantle, your mind instantly turns to one moment: Jack Newnes’ after-the-siren stunner.

However, there’s a very real possibility that it wouldn’t have happened without Petrevski-Seton’s intervention just minutes earlier.

With three minutes to go in the final quarter, and Carlton trailing by three points, Fremantle’s Lachie Schulz was about to seal the deal for his side and break Navy Blue hearts.

However, Petrevski-Seton laid a perfect rundown tackle as the ‘Halls Creek Cowboy’ clung on for dear life, winning a free kick and keeping the Blues in the game.

THEY SAID IT

Assistant coach Dale Amos was full of praise for the 22-year-old’s progress across half back.

“‘Samo’ has had a full pre-season and the start of the season to really adjust to playing [across half back]: the thing that stands out when he plays is the calmness with ball in hand,” Amos said.

“I’ve been really pleased with his growth, he’s showing the ability to defend well.

“If he can keep bringing that every week and we can just get the ball in his hands a little bit more, that’ll certainly help us perform at a higher level.”
