THE curtain has been drawn on an unprecedented 2020 season for the Navy Blues.

Trading Ikon Park for 10 different hotel hubs across Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, it’s been a year we won’t soon forget.

With the final siren having rung on the final game, it’s time to look at those who featured in five or more games for Carlton or made their AFL debuts in 2020.

Here’s the year that was for Carlton’s Patrick Cripps.

OVERVIEW

Mitch McGovern built into consistent appearances in his second year in Navy Blue, the forward playing 12 games after an injury-interrupted first year.

With Charlie Curnow sidelined for the season, McGovern worked alongside Harry McKay and a sweet of small forwards including new recruit Jack Martin to provide an additional avenue to goal.

Joining the Blues in Queensland’s quarantine hub, McGovern played a menacing role in the forward line for much of the year – reacting to the chaos around the ball at ground level.

BEST PERFORMANCE

McGovern’s best performance came in the Blues’ convincing 52-point over the Bulldogs in Round 6.

it was a match wholly owned by Carlton’s trio of talls, with McGovern providing a valuable target inside 50 with two last quarter goals after seven marks.

Adjusting to a new forward line set-up, the Blues’ first score over 100 for the season proved the attacking force they can be when synergetic.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT

Piling on the pressure early in what would be Carlton’s first win of the season, it was a goal from McGovern that pushed the lead to insurmountable for Geelong.

With minutes to go in the first quarter, McGovern was waiting in the wings to intercept the Dangerfield handball to launch one from 50 to make it four goals to nil in the opening term.

THEY SAID IT

Fresh off their second win of the season, senior coach David Teague had plently of praise for the Blues’ tall duo.

“I thought he was really important for us,” Teague said.

“Some of his contest and some of his smarts, you can see how he can set up teammates in space.

“His teammates really value the role he’s playing for the side right now. I thought it was one of his better games for the Club.”
