FOR the last twelve months, the trusted football cliché of ‘one week at a time’ has never been more appropriate than for Carlton’s AFLW team.

Just three days out from the Blues’ season-opening traditional clash with Collingwood, newly-minted Carlton leader Darcy Vescio can hardly believe the week has come.

Speaking to the team on 3AW Sportsday, Vescio gave an insight into the year of uncertainty that has lead them back to another season kicked off at Ikon Park.

“I think back to a few months ago and we were all in lockdown and unsure whether we’d get back to training, let alone be able to play,” Vescio said.

“The girls are just really excited and the team is looking pretty good at the moment.”

From training individually to coming back together in the shadow of a lingering Victorian lockdown and finally welcoming Bluebaggers back ahead Thursday night – the Blues have had to be more adaptable than any other time in the league’s short history.

“I tell you what, we’ve just reverted back to the footy cliché of just taking things day by day and one week at a time,” she said.

“Harf’s been really good at just trying to keep us in the moment because pretty much every day there are different changes around border restrictions and you hear different whispers.

“So he’s just tried to keep us really calm and focused on training really well and making sure we’re doing everything we can to get better at footy, because that’s what we need to be doing so that’s been the main focus for us.”

But with a focus on the day to day and a new favourite phrase, Daniel Harford has kept his Blues on track in the hopes of going one further in 2021.

“His favourite phrase is ‘subject to change’, so he’ll say whatever he wants and then he’ll say everything is subject to change.”
