CARLTON co-captain Patrick Cripps will undergo a fitness test later this week for the Round 17 clash with Geelong.

Cripps injured his foot following a collision in the opening term of Saturday night’s win over Fremantle, but played out the game and willed his team over the line.

A subsequent MRI showed that there was no structural damage for the midfield bull, with Director of High Performance Andrew Russell confirming Cripps’ availability would be determined at the end of the week.

“Structurally, the foot is fine and the MRI was clear: he’s got some inflammation in his foot,” Russell said.

“We’ll test him later in the week to see whether he’s good enough to play this week.”

The Blues are expected to be buoyed by the availability of Zac Fisher and Will Setterfield, who have been unable in recent weeks due to ankle and hand injuries respectively.

Both have trained in recent days, with Russell expecting the duo to put their hands up for selection ahead of this Saturday’s encounter.

“‘Fish’ has missed the last couple of weeks: he trained today and looked great. He’ll train on Thursday and we fully expect him to be available to play this week,” he said.

“‘Setters’ has had a really strong block of training, we’ve pushed him really hard.

“He’s tapped back into some pre-season fitness which is good for him, and we expect him to be available to play as well this week.”

The duo will be joined by the available-again Zac Williams, who was suspended for the win over Fremantle.

Russell also confirmed that Charlie Curnow was nearing a return to action, with a comeback via the VFL in the offing.

“Those who have watched training have been really excited by Charlie, he’s moving really well,” Russell said.

“He’s coming to the back-end of that month’s block of conditioning that he needed to play.

“He’ll continue with that training block and is a chance to play VFL in the upcoming weeks.”
