A product of the Carlton Academy, Ison is a proud Yorta Yorta and Wiradjuri man who played his football for the Oakleigh Chargers prior to officially becoming a Blue.

Ison formed a close relationship with Jesse Motlop even prior to officially becoming a Carlton player, while he was teammates with Cooper Lord and Jagga Smith at Scotch College.
