It was a year of firsts for Sam Philp: his first game, his first win (both against Essendon), his first goal (against St Kilda) and his first contract extension at Carlton. The first-round draft pick impressed all comers in his maiden season at Ikon Park, garnering a reputation for his work ethic and some starring performances at reserves level. Overcoming a groin injury over the pre-season, Philp has been described by Director of High Performance Andrew Russell as a “stronger, more powerful athlete” following the summer.
