CARLTON’S win on Friday night meant that just after the mid-season bye, its AFL team had recorded its most wins in a season since 2013.

And it’s that baptism of fire which co-vice captain Sam Walsh believes has provided perspective and will fuel the team in a crucial run in the coming weeks.

Not for the first time this season, the Blues entered a game with circumstances out of their control but managed to shut out the external noise and produce a victory.

This one came over the arch rival, with Walsh once again a key contributor in a 29-disposal performance against Essendon.

Speaking on 3AW on Saturday, Walsh said the education he gained from his early years at AFL level had taught him some crucial lessons.

“There were times early on where you don’t know what you don’t know,” Walsh said.

“You’ll see from a lot of us boys that hopefully we’ve gained a fair bit of resilience out of that. We have some perspective.

“If you don’t want to put in the work and don’t want to do the right things, then it doesn’t lead to being part of a winning team. All of the guys on our list, even in the VFL, have been playing great footy and attributing to that.

“That gives us great confidence, but we also know that if you don’t keep that up, it can fall away pretty quick.”

The reigning John Nicholls Medallist has been in Carlton’s leadership group since his second season at the Club, and he said the team would continue reinforcing high standards amongst one another as has been a focus all season.

He said a direct example of this was Michael Voss’ address at three-quarter time.

While conversation has raged about it in recent days, Walsh remained matter-of-fact about it in his interview.

“It was a great speech from ‘Vossy’ because it’s what we needed at the time,” he said.

“For us as a group, we’ve got pretty high standards on each other and that’s something we’ve been building since pre-season. This was an extension of that.

“We’ve got a lot of guys that take ownership of what they do and ‘Vossy’ wanted to see us play more tough footy and the way we wanted to for longer.

“It’s something that has been wavering for a bit at the moment, but it shows the belief we’ve got in what we’re doing.”
