TO ROLL out an old football cliché, Jacob Weitering and his side are taking things “one week at a time”.

Despite a disappointing loss to the Crows on the weekend, the Carlton co-vice captain is excited by the opportunity the team's football thus far has granted them, coming into the tail-end of the season.

“Obviously, it was a disappointing result against Adelaide over there,” Weitering said.

“But we’ve got Brisbane which is a fantastic opportunity this week, and then Melbourne and Collingwood to finish off. If we are wanting to test ourselves at the end of the year, these are the teams we’re going to be playing against.”

For Weitering, the most discouraging aspect of the weekend’s clash with the Crows was being beaten at the coalface – an area in which the Blues have previously reaped great reward.

However, it’s provided a tangible aspect for the group to work on during the week.

“It’s always a tough pill to swallow when you get out-hunted and beaten in the contest, but we’ve got some bulls in there with Cripps, Kennedy, Walsh, Cerra and Hewett to come back," he said.

“We’ve got some strong guys that can really do a job in that area, so we have full confidence.”

The other key for the Blues will be recapturing the consistency produced earlier in the season.

“At the start of the year, we were just bringing our strengths – our offence was flowing, and our defence was holding up," he said.

“Teams adjust, teams understand what our strengths are, and they start to negate a few of those.

“It’s probably been an inconsistent block of games for us, but it provides us with a massive opportunity to bounce back against a side that probably needs to do the same.

That opportunity awaits in Brisbane, where the Lions will seek to atone for last week’s last-minute loss to the Tigers and keep their top-four hopes alive.

With their forward line firing, Weitering is conscious that defensive structures will be paramount – as well as an individual challenge up against spearhead, Joe Daniher.

“They’ve got some tall timber down there and obviously their smalls are really dangerous as well," he said.

"Full confidence to us, with the personnel we have now – we’re starting to get some troops back with 'Pitto' [Marc Pittonet] and 'Gov' [Mitch McGovern] coming back and getting into some form.

“They’ve got the firepower to match ours so full respect to them – we’ll bring our strengths and they’ll bring theirs and I’m sure it will be a really good challenge.”

The battle with Brisbane forms one part of a vital three weeks for the Blues, and Weitering is eager to ensure his side’s fate remains in their own hands.

“Not looking too far ahead, I’ve been through some pretty tough times at this Club so coming out on a Monday after a loss is still very disappointing.

"We’ll certainly learn from what happened on the weekend but at the same time, we’re in a strong position and the opportunity is there for us to take with both hands and we’re ready to do that.”
