ABBIE MCKAY has been rewarded for her breakout season seven, nominated for the AFLW Coles Fan Awards in the ‘Most Improved Player’ category.

McKay has displayed steady improvement across her previous four AFLW seasons, but took her game to a new level in season seven amidst added responsibility within a young midfield.

Although only 21 years of age herself, McKay has led the Blues’ engine room alongside reigning Rising Star Mimi Hill, with the pair providing their side with first use through bullish contested work.

Improving on all key statistics from season six to seven, McKay averaged 20.7 disposals (up on last season’s 13.8), 11.6 contested possessions (6.2), 4.8 clearances (2.2) and 7.4 tackles (3.3).

Arguably McKay’s best game came in Round 4 against Fremantle, recording 29 disposals, ten clearances, eight tackles and 300 metres gained in the drawn result.

She also proved one of Carlton’s most consistent performers, tallying AFLCA votes in six games and was the highest-polling Blue overall with 27 votes.
