Two-time Brownlow Medallist and former Carlton captain Chris Judd has been confirmed to make his return to the AFL via the Northern Blues today.

It will be Judd’s second game of football for 2014 after injuring his Achilles during the pre-season, and tearing his hamstring in Carlton’s win over Western Bulldogs in Round 5.

Laying claim to accolades from Premiership captain, to Norm Smith Medallist to multiple Leigh Matthews Trophy winner, Judd – initially drafted from Sandringham Under 18s – has never played a game of VFL through his career.

The last time Judd played in a reserves competition was back in 2002 for East Perth in the WAFL. He would go onto kick four goals and amass 32 possessions to signify the start of a magnificent career.

Alongside Judd, Northern Knight's top-ager Jordan Perry will make his VFL debut as the Blues' 23rd man.

Perry has been a member of the Blues' Development side for the previous two rounds off the back of outstanding numbers in the TAC Cup for the Northern Knights.

Averaging over 25 disposals, five marks and five tackles so far for the Knights, Perry was a surprise omission from the Victorian Metro state side, but has been earmarked as one to look out for.

Northern Blues GM Garry O’Sullivan said despite it being a normal game that the Blues are desperate to win; it will be difficult to ignore the significance of Judd playing.

“It’s not every day a name like Chris Judd graces your team sheet,” O’Sullivan said.

“We’re realistic. The Northern Blues are a platform for Carlton-listed players to develop their game in readiness for AFL football and this is no exception.

“We’re understanding of both Chris’ and Carlton’s situation. We expect him to play modified game time with the best outcome being that he gets through the match unscathed as part of his road back from recovery.”

O’Sullivan says he expects plenty of interest in Judd on game day, saying it’s a massive opportunity for the football club.

“This is a great opportunity for our boys. To have someone of Chris’ stature, at Visy Park, we’re hopeful of a solid turnout,” he said.

“I encourage Carlton, Northern Blues and football fans to come down and experience a day of VFL football.”
