Special moments demand special deeds – and so it was on Saturday night, in the euphoric aftermath of Carlton’s first victory over Hawthorn in 12 years, that Dale Thomas delivered.
After the players had locked arms just moments before belting out that famous reworked version of Lil of Laguna, 'Daisy' piped in with his own unique prelude to the Club’s theme song.
“I AM NAVY, I AM BLUE, WE ARE CARLTON – WHO ARE YOU? WHO? WHO? WHO?”.
Thomas revealed that the precedent was set in the visitors’ room at Metricon Stadium way back in lucky Round 13, when the Blues last got up, against Gold Coast.
“A few of the boys were in on this. It was just a little chant we’d been mucking around with at training. We went with it after beating the Suns and we thought we’d whip it out again,” Thomas said.
Asked if he was responsible for devising the lyrics, Thomas implied he’d drawn on them from as far back as his days at Drouin Secondary College.
“I’m not 100 per cent sure where it originated from, but it’s something along the lines of an old chant from school days,” he said. “It’d be a pretty common chant belted out by teams or groups.”
As to whether he’ll be belting out the prelude after ever victory from hereon in, Thomas was a little more circumspect.
“I’m not sure if it will happen every time as I don’t want it to be something that takes away from the song itself,” came the reply, “but if the boys get up and we’re feeling it then there’s probably a fair chance.”
