The Carlton Football Club is thrilled to announce defender Nic Newman has signed on for two more years at the Blues.

It continues a great football story which has seen Newman earn everything that has comes his way, endearing himself to the Carlton faithful in the process.

The Blues traded a future fourth-round draft pick to acquire the defender at the end of 2018, after 31 games in four seasons at the Swans.

Since then, he has set about becoming a hallmark of the Blues’ back six, reaching 50 games in the Navy Blue last year, the same season in which he earned his second Best Clubman award (2020 and 2022) – a testament to the regard in which he is held around IKON Park, both on and off the field.

Newman also reached the 100 AFL game milestone a fortnight ago against the Dockers.

The reliable defender has had a blistering start to the 2023 AFL season, showcasing clever ball skills (85 per cent by foot) and an incredible ability of locking down his opponent.

In Round 3 against Greater Western Sydney, Newman demonstrated his impressive defensive skills, keeping Giants captain and dynamic forward Toby Green to four disposals and a goal, whilst collecting 24 disposals of his own.

Averaging 20.7 disposals for the season so far, the all-rounder’s game has seen him playing an organisational role in defence whilst using his tenacity to force turnovers.

Newman has also earned a reputation for his unrelenting efforts on the field and his passion and drive off it and in the last few years has also been part of the AFLW coaching group.

Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said the Club is delighted to sign Newman until the end of 2025.

“Nic has had a terrific season, building from the real consistency he showed last year, so we are so excited to see him continue his commitment to the Club,” Austin said.

“Nic had a solid pre-season and it is exciting to see his efforts rewarded so far this year. His passion for the game and his teammates is evident every time he steps onto the field, it is underrated the standards he helps set in leading by example for us.

“He is a natural leader both on the field and off and it has been inspiring to see him take the younger players under his wing, educating and coaching them to not only be better individual players but also great teammates.

“Nic is the exact player you want to help build a strong, sustainable culture at your football club.”
