AFLW SENIOR Coach Mathew Buck provided his thoughts on the Blues' loss to Port Adelaide in Week 5.
On his summation of the game:
"They got us in the territory game and unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalise on the opportunities we had earlier in the game. Coming off a couple of short breaks, the end of the game, they came over the top pretty hard. It’s a disappointing one but we have to capitalise on those opportunities when we get them.
"I feel like our basic fundamentals were a little bit off tonight which certainly didn’t help capitalise on those chains of play that we had to get the ball inside our 50."
On the condensed schedule of games:
"Everyone is going through it so it is hard for everyone and we’re understanding of that. Our girls were well prepped for today’s game, our high performance team do an amazing job. We’re sore but I imagine all teams are."
On capitalising on opportunities:
"I thought we got out of the contest pretty well by hand and gave ourselves the ability to find uncontested marks and then we’d have a breakdown in that chain that I mentioned. Some fundamental errors let us down, but I don’t think we over-possessed the ball too much, I thought we got the ball out into space nicely but couldn’t capitalise."
On young leaders stepping up:
"We had a bit of void in our leadership tonight with our captain and co-vice captain missing so to see Keeley Sherar and Mimi Hill put out some really strong performances was fantastic. I thought they led from the front and that was a positive."
